Khalaktyrsky Beach

You have probably seen photos online of the black sand on the Pacific coast. During the trip, you can feel its texture for yourself, take hundreds of photos against the otherworldly landscape, or fly a kite. Khalaktyrsky Beach was formed by the long interplay of volcanoes, rivers, and the ocean. Over millennia, mountain rivers and streams ground down flows of lava and volcanic slag and washed them into the ocean, while the waves carried the fine particles back to shore. This is how a 20-meter-deep layer of volcanic sand formed along 30 kilometers of coastline. Volcanic sand, high roaring waves, salty wind, cliffs, berry patches, and thickets of dwarf cedar.

Avacha Bay Embankment

This is a popular walking area in the city’s historic center, located on the shore of Avacha Bay and running around Kultuchnoye Lake. It offers picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean, the bay, and the snow-capped volcanoes.

Nikolskaya Hill

Nikolskaya Hill, 108 meters high, is one of three hills located right within the city. It was at its foot that the navigator Vitus Bering founded the base of the Second Kamchatka Expedition in 1740 — the future Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. In 2019, the natural and historical park at the summit was renovated, offering a wonderful view of Avacha Bay. It is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Here stand monuments to the city's defenders during the Pacific campaign of the Crimean War. In 1854, Russian artillery on the hill's slopes defended the city against the Anglo-French fleet. Today, a chapel stands on the site of a mass grave on the hill's eastern slope. The hill also has a monument to the Red Army soldiers who liberated the Kuril Islands in 1945. Take note of the stone birches: these trees are a symbol of Kamchatka. They grow slowly and can live up to 400 years.

Memorial Wall Dedicated to the Heroic Defense of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in 1854

It presents a schematic depiction of the key events. In August 1854, an Anglo-French squadron entered Avacha Bay. Despite being heavily outnumbered by the enemy, the Petropavlovsk garrison fought back. The landing force that came ashore on Nikolskaya Hill was defeated, and the squadron’s ships were forced to leave the bay.

Petrovskaya Hill

To admire the city and Avacha Bay from above, head to the observation deck on Petrovskaya Hill. It stands at a height of 270 meters and offers stunning views. No words can fully convey the beauty that captivates visitors here. The summit of Petrovskaya Hill is also home to a ski resort with the steepest slope in the region.
