Argun Gorge

About

One of the routes of the Great Silk Road passed through here. The Argun River has carved the gorge between the Black Mountains for millennia. Ancient towers, castles, and defensive complexes preserve traces of the past. In the Middle Ages, trade with Georgia passed through the gorge, which was guarded by a system of signal towers. Even small detachments could hold off enemies thanks to the complex landscape and thoughtful architecture. Today, the site is popular for jeep tours and hiking.
