The first Russian professional theater. Founded in 1750 by merchant Fedor Volkov. At that time, performances were held in a regular barn. The current building of the theater, in classical style with white columns and sculptures of Apollo and Muses, was built in 1911. Be sure to sign up for a tour. It’s conducted not by guides, but by actresses. They will tell you how performances are created, take you into the mysteries of the theater’s basement, and show unique historical costumes.
