Great Bolgar

About

Founded in the 9th–10th centuries, Bolgar was one of the largest cities of the Golden Horde. Today, this ancient settlement on the banks of the Volga is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can see the ruins of the Cathedral Mosque, the Eastern Mausoleum, the White Mosque, and the 14th-century Black Chamber. The Bolgar State Museum-Reserve offers tours of the main sights of Great Bolgar, including a 500-kilogram Quran.
