Merchant Houses

About

Tyumen is home to remarkably preserved wooden architecture from the late 19th to early 20th century. The city’s signature carved woodwork is among the most elaborate in Russia. These facades are richly decorated — resembling baroque palace interiors — and cast dramatic shadows depending on the light. Each detail held meaning: floral patterns symbolized prosperity; scrolls stood for education; and kokoshnik-shaped window frames meant a bride-to-be lived inside. Window frames were often the most expensive element — sometimes costing more than the entire house.
