Molochnaya Gora Street

About

A street with mansions and museums In the 19th century, merchants brought milk, kvass, bread, fish, and flour to Kostroma, and the trading rows were filled with the shouts of vendors and the clatter of milk cans — which is how Molochnaya Gora (Milk Hill) got its name. The street blends organically into the city’s late 18th-century architecture, opening a view of the central square. Here, the Moscow Gate has been preserved — once the ceremonial entrance to the city from the river — with eagles on obelisks, merchant houses, and the Fish Rows building, now home to an art gallery. One of the curious buildings is house No. 3, where before the revolution, there was a canteen belonging to the Temperance Society.
