The citadel of the Derbent fortress, built to guard the Caspian Gates leading into Persia. The main jewel of Derbent was constructed in the 6th century by order of Persian Shah Khosrow I Anushirvan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was built over several centuries. Today, it is an open-air museum. You can explore three-meter-high fortress walls, underground water reservoirs, the oldest mosque in Russia, a Christian temple, the Khan’s palace, and an ancient prison.
