Tobolsk Bone Carving Factory

The route ends with the study of a local craft that appeared here in the 18th century — artistic bone carving. The factory itself is the only factory in Russia producing bone carvings. It was established in 1929 when the first generation of Tobolsk carvers created a bone carving workshop at the "Kustar" artel. Modern masters continue historical traditions, working with both expensive mammoth tusks and relatively inexpensive moose antlers and metatarsals. During the tour, you will visit the production workshops, see the masters’ tools, witness the work process, and even participate in master classes — cutting blanks, carving, polishing, and bleaching. Visit the souvenir shop at the factory, where you can buy an original bone gift, such as a delicate pendant, figurine, or a miniature scene entirely carved from bone.
