Avacha Bay Embankment

About

Avacha Bay is one of the largest bays in the world. Its coastline stretches 24 km. The bay is separated from the ocean by a 3-km isthmus between the Mayachny and Bezymyanny capes. The views of the bay can be enjoyed from many points — just walk to the shore. The best views are from the Nikolskaya Sopka — there are the best observation platforms. Take a walk along the Fleet Alley. Here you’ll find not only stunning views of the bay, but also interesting monuments: a ship-side–shaped monument dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy, a giant whale tail, and a crab claw sculpture. The bay is unique not only for its size. In the water, you’ll see jellyfish, sea cucumbers (holothurians), sea urchins, and on the rocks — “mussel banks,” seals, sea lions, and thousands of seabirds. We recommend taking an excursion to Starichkov Island, 12 km from the city: it’s home to colonies of 44 species of birds! The island itself is only accessible to scientists, but you can observe the birds from the water. On the way, you’ll see the symbol of Avacha Bay — the Three Brothers rock formations and, if lucky, whales, orcas, and dolphins.
