About
The historical and administrative center Here, at the foot of the hill, Vitus Bering founded the first settlement in 1740. On the eastern slope, there’s a monument to the liberators of the Kuril Islands during the Crimean War of 1854. To see the monument, head south along Lenin Street. A metal staircase leads to the monument “Glory.” Two hundred meters away is a pedestal with a cannon, and just below, the guns of the Maksutov battery, which defended the port from the Anglo-French squadron. On Nikolskaya Sopka, you’ll find the city promenade, which offers wonderful views of Avacha Bay. In summer, couples often come here for walks — which is why Nikolskaya is unofficially called the “Hill of Love.” Take note of the stone birches: these trees are a symbol of Kamchatka. They grow slowly and can live up to 400 years. At the top of the hill, there is a small “town” for children with models of Kamchatka volcanoes and an observation deck. In the northern part of the hill is the city's main square — Lenin Square. Nearby is the regional government building, the drama and comedy theater, and the art museum. Also to the north is the Central City Beach.
