“Inomarka” Exhibition

An exhibition about the informal car markets that emerged in Russia in the 1990s. The exhibition explores the informal car markets of the 1990s, the people who built them, and the cars for which they were willing to take any risk. At the time, cars were sold on vacant lots, near stadiums, and on the outskirts of cities. Foreign cars were brought in from Europe and Japan; spare parts were sold on site, cars were repaired right there, and buyers were found through word of mouth. For several years, the Moscow Transport Museum has been documenting this story: speaking with eyewitnesses, working with archives, and recording the stories of car importers, dealers, and mechanics. At the exhibition in Pavilion No. 26 “Transport of the USSR” at VDNH, all of this can be seen together for the first time — from the first foreign cars to the end of the era of informal car markets.
