About
An arts center of wide renown. Located 18 km south of Smolensk is the former Tenishev estate, Talashkino. Here, at the turn of the 20th century, the famous patron, collector, and artist Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva established a creative workshop. You will see the "Teremok" - a wooden house decorated with carvings based on Russian epics and fairy tales. It was built in 1901 from a design by Sergei Malyutin, the creator of the Russian matryoshka doll. It now houses a museum. The Church of the Holy Spirit is also of particular interest. The preserved interior murals, created from a design by Nicholas Roerich, are especially valuable.
