About
One of the oldest landmarks of Pyatigorsk The grotto was built in 1831 to commemorate the first ascent of the highest mountain in the Caucasus — Elbrus. It was ascended by Kabardian Kilar Khashirov during a military expedition. In the 19th century, balls were held in the grotto, attended by Russian aristocrats and creative elites. On clear days, you can see the snow-capped peak of Elbrus from here.
