About
A symbol of Magnitogorsk. This memorial sign is shaped like a triangular canvas tent. It symbolizes the harsh conditions in which the first builders of what would become a major industrial center had to live. At the time, Komsomol volunteers, workers, Red Army soldiers, and settlers came to take part in this major Soviet construction project. They lived in tents, dugouts, barracks, and temporary houses, working for the benefit of their country. Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works began operations just three years after the arrival of the first train carrying workers and equipment.
